Surfing

Cabo San Lucas offers several fine surfing areas that are located along the Corridor and near San Jose del Cabo. The prime surfing spots on the Corridor are Playa Barco Varado and Playa Cabo Bello. Just outside of San Jose, the best surfing is found at Playa Costa Azul near Punta Palmilla and Acapulquito Beach.

The Cabo area is less popular as a surfing spot than the northern coast of Baja. However, surfers continue to come to Cabo San Lucas from all over the world. Locations with good wave action can be found during both the winter and summer seasons. In addition to good known surfing spots, Cabo San Lucas harbors many "secret" spots that are known only to locals. Seasoned and intuitive surfers will eventually discover these spots for themselves.

The summer season brings good swells from a southern direction. The beaches along the "corridor", a 15-20 mile stretch between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo, on the Sea of Cortez, is the best place to be. The winter season brings swells from the northwest along the Pacific coast. The water temperature is between 21 degrees C. (70/F) and 29/C. (85/F) year round and the sun is always hot. The "chubasco" or storm season, from late summer to early fall, offers the best wave action of the year.

Short boards are adequate for most surfing in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo surf shops provide surfing gear, board repairs, rentals, and surf wear.

Premier Surfing Spots
The most popular surfing spot is known as "Zippers." It is located between Km. 28-29 on Mexican Hwy. 1 at Playa Costa Azul.

Playa Costa Azul (Blue Coast Beach)
Location: Near Km. 29 off of the main highway.
Access: Exit from highway at Km. 29.
Swimming: Only recommended for surfers.
Features: Excellent surfing beach.

Playa Barco Varado (Shipwreck Beach)
Location: Near Km. 9 on the main highway.
Access: Marked access road off of highway.
Swimming: Swim with caution.
Features: Good for snorkeling, diving, and surfing. Tide pools.

Playa Acapulquito
Location: Km. 28
Access: Road off of main highway.
Swimming: Swim with caution.
Features: Surfer hangout.
